Council Member Dan Arriola has found himself in the crosshairs of angry Tracy voters following his support of Veronica Vargas' Downtown TOD Specific Plan that comes with a hefty $707,962 price tag to taxpayers! As part of Arriola's justification in moving forward with the Plan, he downplayed the significance of this past November's Measure Y's results. Big time. Watch for yourself:
In other words, Arriola could care less if the majority of voters rejected Measure Y! In his mind, the Measure was defeated by only a few thousand votes and that there are a lot of people who did not vote. Really? He's giving deference to all the people that choose NOT to participate in the core foundation of our democracy - voting.
Maybe we should apply the "Arriola Standard" to his own 2018 election results?
As you can can see below, Arriola received 4,605 votes in a City with a population of almost 100,000. That was only 601 more votes than Veronica Vargas' vote total and a narrow win margin overall. Based on the "Arriola Standard," with over 95,000 non-voters and a narrow margin of victory, Dan's election results hold no significance.
Online Petition Launched
Some residents are taking it a step further by launching an online petition calling for Dan Arriola's recall. Yesterday, 209 Times posted about people's anger over Arriola's stance on Measure Y. Today they revealed that an online recall petition has been launched against Arriola. Click here to see the petition.
Council Member Arriola is a smart individual, a successful attorney, and to many a promising political future.
So it's puzzling why he was so quick to dismiss the majority of voters who opposed Measure Y. It was the will of the voters. Why is he aligning himself so closely with Veronica Vargas and her Downtown TOD Specific Plan?
